2011 marked a turning point for the Western Colorado Conservation Corps. We achieved many of our goals and laid a foundation for 2012 which allow the reconstruction of the framework of the WCCC resulting in better and safer work, more youth served, educated, and provided scholarships; and an overall improvement of the Youth Corps experience.

In 2011 we:
Served 197 Youth & Young Adults.
Completed 50,750+ Hours of Field Work.
Learned Environmental, Life-Skill, Career & Academic Lessons in 7,000+ Hours of Trainings.
Certified 116+ Youth in Skill Sets Ranging From Sawyership to CPR.
Earned $96,000 in AmeriCorps Award Scholarships for Higher Education.
And 6 Corpsmembers earned their GED’s.

CYCA Hill Day Awards Ceremony - Denver Feb 2 2012

[Grand Junction], Colo.– The Colorado Youth Corps Association (CYCA) honors its 2011 Corpsmembers of the Year and Champions at the annual Youth Corps Awards Ceremony Monday, Feb. 6 at 8:15 a.m. at the Colorado State Capitol Old Supreme Court Chambers (second floor). CYCA will honor 10 young people from across the state as 2011 Corpsmembers of the Year including Levi Garrick from the Western Colorado Conservation Corps of Mesa County Partners.

Regional Field Coordinator Eric Hughes said “Levi leads by example, has a positive attitude, and is always willing to learn… [he] is the ideal crew member.”

“We look forward to seeing his achievements.” – Field Coordinator Matt Jennings.

“Levi is an outstanding crew member, who truly deserves the recognition afforded by this great honor. Of the 197 corpsmembers employed this year, Levi was chosen as Corpsmember of the Year for his dedicated work ethic, leadership, willingness to learn, and always going beyond what is required. The staff here at the Corps are confident that he will go far with qualities so exemplary and rare.” – Director Trevor Wickersham.

In addition, Helen Hankins, Colorado State Director of the Bureau of Land Management, will be honored as the 2011 Champion for Youth. The Colorado Department of Natural Resources and Great Outdoors Colorado will receive Partner of the Year awards.

Joining Levi Garrick in receiving 2011 Corpsmember of the Year awards are:

Samuel Vasquez, Mile High Youth Corps-Denver

Trail construction and maintenance, fire fuels mitigation, invasive species removal, and more projects like these in Western Colorado employing 10 youths/site on jobs like these are made possible by Great Outdoors Colorado/Colorado Lottery Funding.

2011 GOCO Projects included: Mesa County Riverfront Trail (GJ/Fruita), Baxter Gulch Trail (Crested Butte), West Lake Park Disc Golf Course (GJ), Burkey Park Footpath (GJ), Matchett Park Fence (GJ).

WCCC is engaged in a number of projects focused on the maintenance of Western Colorado’s varying ecosystems. We work with agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, the Colorado National Monument, Vega State Park, and many more. Most projects are focused on Trail building & maintenance, Invasive plant species removal such as Tamarisk & Russian Olive, Habitat restoration, Fire fuels mitigation, Erosion control, Fence construction and maintenance, and Campground maintenance.
